VW up! – videomapping show

For seven days I joined the guys at Ubereck to help out on their videomapping project for Volkswagen. I would’ve loved to stay longer, but I already had a flight booked…

Anyway, my task was to create animation pieces with the VW Up that could later get cut and looped into the big composition the team put together.

You can see my main part at 2:25 in the video. The parts where the car sits on a disc a few seconds later are also done by me.

It was a fun experience to work with the Ubereck team on an unusal project like this. The video was projected on a semitransparent “holographic” foil that was framed by a foreground object. Behind, the projecton got enhanced by the background that extends to fill the walls of the whole hall.

All of this was hard to just imagine, so the tech savy guys at Ubereck decided to previsualize the whole thing in VR, using the Unreal Engine and the HTC Vive. With this method the team was able to make very precise decisions on what the show will look like live at the VW Up Party.
